Why did I start Nalane
As an African child brought up in the tradition of folklore, heritage is an inseparable part of me. Language, culture and tradition define who I am. This part about us African people was missing on the internet in 1997 when I started working. I set out to correct this obvious error of judgement.
On Education
I completed matric in 1993 at Thahameso Secondary in Bolata village, and I had no idea what I wanted to do for a living. I have tried studying Information Technology through Tecknikon SA but could never finish my last year. The course was not inspiring for me. I am now registered for a BA in Sesotho and Theory of Literature. This creates problems for me because I now learn that you study Sesotho in English? That does not make sense to me at all. I might as well have registered for English if I wanted to study English. This is a real problem facing African languages in this country, that they are relegated to nothingness.
I have since decided to write in my own languages, being Sesotho and isiXhosa. You will notice a number of publications coming up under Publications. This is the direct result of that determination.
I would love to further study my languages, but under the current circumstances, I am not willing to study English, with my language a sub component of that study. These curriculums have been designed with non mother tongue speakers in mind, and I am expected to study that? Me thinks not.
What Else
I write on futhwa.org.za, my personal site. I have worked as a software developer for about a decade and a half.
I am trying to figure out the best way to render this site in multiple languages. So I will be experimenting with a number of things, please bear with me.
Vision
It is my greatest honour to work on the development of my cultural heritage. Everything takes place in language. Language is the core focus of what I do.
Now that I am self publishing in Sesotho, a big part of this site will be dedicated to e-commerce, allowing me and others to sell material relevant to what this site is about.
